Mas d'Aranyó (MAS-dah-ran-YO) is made mostly from Ull de Llebre (eye of the jack rabbit), the local Catalan name for Tempranillo, one of the world's great red wine grapes.
At its best, as in this wine, the wine can be rich and velvety with a touch of elegance and finesse with flavor characteristics similar to Pinot Noir. Mas d'Aranyó uses estate-grown, hand-picked, grapes from 19 year-old Tempranillo and 23 year-old Cabernet Sauvignon.
75% Tempranillo 25% Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2004 vintage is cherry red in color with some touches of garnet. Aromas of vanilla mingle with notes of ground coffee and spices.
It is velvety smooth on the palate with soft tannins and a finish of vanilla with dark licorice.
Because of excellent balance and acidity, the Mas d'Aranyó is an excellent wine to serve with many different foods, ranging from simple grilled chicken to a more complex pork tenderloin with rosemary or tarragon.
It would also match well with slightly spicy dishes and sauces like a lavender-honey aioli.
On a more informal basis, it would be a classic match with tapas or pepperoni pizza.
