Vintage
The 2013 vintage was marked by spring rains, a shortage of rain in summer and a slight delay in the final ripening cycle of the plants; as a result, harvest was slightly later than normal, and fine weather in both September and October allowed the grapes to finish ripening slowly and in a balanced manner. This is turn kept levels of acidity high and create a perfect balance between alcohol, acidity and phenolic ripeness. To add to these wonderful conditions we can add the perfect health of the grapes, brought about by virtually no rainfall during the final ripening phase.
Winemaking
Following our usual vineyard controls, picking on the plots selected to produce Mas de Subirà started in the third week of September.
The grapes are entirely from our own estate and are collected in small, 18kg capacity boxes and are brought up to the winery where they are destalked and drained. Following a short pre-fermentation, all the tanks are tasted every day, in order to make on the winemaking decisions most appropriate for each tank. Following appropriate analysis and exhaustive tasting a racking date is decided upon.
Once racked, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, and then matured in barrel for 12 months.
Tasting note
Bright cherry red, lively and clean.
Intense on the nose, with ripe black fruit predominating. From its ageing in barrel, there are notes of dark chocolate, smokiness and toast.
Very well structured, with ripe, rounded tannins. The balance between acidity, alcohol and the tannins shows a great potential for bottle ageing. On the back palate the well ripened fruit and the toasty notes we find on the nose reappear. The finish is long and persistent.
